بسم ا.. الرحمن الرحیم

Excellences,
Distinguished Participants,
Ladies and Gentlemen,

As the Secretary I am honoured to welcome you to the 1st International Forum on Environmental Ethics, jointly organised by the Department of Environment of Islamic Republic of Iran,University of Environment, and the ECO Institute of Environmental Sciences and Technology.

This event has been organised to appreciate today’s level of awareness and intellectualism that entails a new outlook and perception of the environment and importance of protecting and sustaining it,an outlook that needs to pay attention to the whole world and all of its inhabitants, ecosystems and creators from an ethical point of view.

Fortunately nowadays we experience an increasing trend in public awareness towards the importance of this matter and a surge of global attention to the ethical aspects of conserving the nature and protecting the environment which definitely roots in our religion, traditions, culture and historic background.

In an era which is mostly known for Global Warming and extinction of vulnerable biological diversity,we are here to discuss and think over to the ethical and moral aspects of our behavior towards environment.

Dear Guests,
We are here,at the 1st International Forum on Environmental Ethics to endeavour to answer questions such as:
1. What environmental ethical obligation(s) do we need to keep for future generation?
2. Is it morally acceptable for human to knowingly use techniques that cause damage to the environment for the convenience of humanity?
3. Do industries have a moral obligation to restore their damages to the land form and ecosystems?
4. Why should we really care about the environment, what makes environmental issues genuine moral issues?
5. Shall we over-exploit the planet s natural resources?
6. What is the relationship between environmental ethics and climate change?
7. What is the role of religions in environmental ethics?
8. Can religion be part of the solution to the environmental issues?
9. Which values ought to be respected and protected in favor of the nature?
10. What is the stand of different religions and theological centers of thought to such issues?

With support of the several national, regional, international institutions,we have brought together academia, experts of environmental and social sciences, theologists, political corps,UN agencies,NGOs,IGOs,Media, university student and other interested groups,to have a brain storm among experts and thinkers.

Ladies and Gentlemen,

I hope that we will have a fruitful, informative and thought-provoking Forum.

And last but not least,
I want to draw your attention to this interesting fact that, tonight we will celebrate the birth of Imam Alī ibn Mūsā al-Riḍā who,is famous in the history for giving shelter to a Gazelle from hunters and saving its life, and so is called the "Gazelle Saviour",and every year this day is celebrated in Iran as the Day of "Environmental Guards". So it is by no means surprising that our society should have a special attention and consideration for the importance of protecting the environment and biodiversity.

On this occasion, one of our graduate students at the University of the Environment have been produced a video clip and kindly agreed to show it for the first time, here at the Forum. Hope that you also like it .

Thank you.
